Owner's 12-year-old 50-gal Bradford White started leaking at the tank base on a Friday evening. We capped + drained it Saturday morning. The conversation Saturday afternoon: like-for-like replacement at $1,950 flat, or step up to tankless at $4,300 net of rebate/credit. Family had two teenagers competing for shower time and a soaking tub off the master — tankless was the right call for the next 15 years in this house.
Rinnai RU199iN at 199K BTU — plenty for 4-person simultaneous demand. Required upsizing the gas line from 1/2 to 3/4 inch from the meter (CSST run, simpler than rigid black-pipe in this chase). Vented through the existing tank chase with a concentric direct-vent kit — no new roof penetration. Recirc pump retrofitted to the existing return line.
Half-day install, two technicians. The bottleneck wasn't the unit itself, it was the gas-line upsize (drywall opened at two stud bays). Drywall patch + paint touch-up done before we left at 3pm. Denver Building inspection scheduled Day 2; passed first attempt.
